Fifth graders put their skills into practice, develop leadership, and prepare for their next step in Scouting.

New to Cub Scouts? Your child can join at this grade without earning earlier ranks.

Six adventures. Skills that grow.

Scouts earn their rank by completing these six required adventures and at least two electives. Start with Bobcat, then explore the others with your den and family.

Bobcat

Scouts form a patrol, choose a name, elect a patrol leader, and create a code of conduct. They practice Scout traditions and visit a troop, gaining a first look at the teamwork and youth leadership that come next. Personal-safety activities continue at home.

Personal Fitness

Scouts plan and prepare a balanced meal using campout equipment. They track their activity over two weeks, exercise with others, and reflect on what they enjoy—turning healthy living into a habit they can carry into their next Scouting adventure.

First Aid

Scouts learn how to respond when someone needs help, including urgent situations and common injuries. They practice skills for choking, bleeding, burns, bites, and more, assemble a personal first-aid kit, and learn how to use its contents.

Duty to God

Scouts explore how family faith traditions connect with the Scout Law and everyday choices. They meet someone from a faith-based organization that helps people in crisis regardless of belief, then reflect on what Duty to God means in their own lives.

Citizenship

Scouts take a larger role in serving others: they identify a useful community project and help plan how to carry it out safely. They contribute at least two hours of service, learning that citizenship includes preparation, teamwork, and following through.

Outdoor Adventurer

Scouts prepare for an overnight campout, locate their campsite on a map, and plan personal and shared gear. They help set up the patrol campsite, practice safe food handling and outdoor care, then review what they learned and how to improve their next trip.

Scouts complete at least two electives and can keep exploring more of their interests.
